Reflection Workshop on educational activities at La Hita Observatory

created: Mon, 22 Apr 2013

On Tuesday 16th of April, a meeting with teachers was held at La Hita Observatory (La Puebla de Almoradiel, province of Toledo).

The workshop targeted teachers engaged with Discover the Cosmos' project during the current academic year plus other teachers working in the region that did not participate with scientific activities but are interested on implementing inquiry-based science education somehow.

Most of the teachers worked with the application 'Setting references when everything moves: stellar streams', so they had the opportunity to discuss their experiences based on how students reacted to the exercises and how did dynamics during the class work.

Some other teachers that came to the workshop were familiar with Discover the Cosmos but did not use the educational scenarios in their classrooms rather because their specific subject was not a scientific one, rather because of a lack of time. Anyhow, those who did not participate yet were interested on implementing educational strategies using inquiry-based science education and coordinating different departments in their schools in order to support a cross-disciplinary learning method.

The meeting was streamed live using Google+ 'hangouts', so one of the most active teachers who was not able to attend the reflection workshop could participate in the discussion.

At the end of the reunion, La Hita Observatory staff made a tour through their buildings showing different telescopes used both for scientific research and dissemination of science.
