One Masterclass organized by the Discover the COSMOS and the University of Ioannina took place at the premises of the University on the 14th of May 2013, last day of the Greek high school classes.
Ioannina with 120,000 inhabitants is one of the largest cities in Greece located at the northwest part of it. The University, one of the largest and oldest in the country, has about 20,000 students and is situated at the outskirts of the city.
The nearby high school of Pedini visited the University with about 40 students, followed a lecture of Prof. C.Fountas of Ioannina on CERN, LHC and the CMS experiment. After the lecture the students worked in one of the University computer labs with the HYPATIA event analysis “hands-on” tool. The students analysed real events from the LHC ATLAS experiment and looked for Higgs particle candidates. At the end of the day all students left with a pretty good experience of what takes “to be a researcher for a day ”..
