HANDS-ON UNIVERSE™ - GALAXY FEATURES UNIT

Original Title:

    HANDS-ON UNIVERSE™ - GALAXY FEATURES UNIT

        Keywords:

Shapes of galaxies; galaxy nucleus; foreground stars and spiral arms.

        Description:

Look at pictures of NGC 4636 and NGC 4697 in the "Galaxy Atlas" catalogue. These do not look like the beautiful spirals we have already seen. In fact, these galaxies are simply a lot of stars clumped into the same region of space with no measurable interstellar dust or gas. Since there is almost no gas and dust in these galaxies, new stars are not forming now. The galaxies look like ellipses, so astronomers call them "elliptical galaxies".
